Explosive Backing 00

Emerging Capabilities in Explosive Entry

Explosive Entry has long been a critical tool in military and law enforcement operations. It provides an element of speed, violence, and control that makes it superior to other methods of breaching (such as mechanical breaching, ballistic breaching, chemical incapacitants, or riot control agents). While explosive entry is a superior tactical capability, it is a hotly debated issue.  Improperly used explosive entry can be dangerous for both operators and bystanders. For this reason, 21st Century Breaching Kit has recently partnered with military and law enforcement training centers to develop explosive entry support products that mitigate the dangers associated with explosive entry systems, making them quicker, simpler, and safer.

One explosive breaching support product recently developed by 21st Century Breaching Kit is the Instant Stick:

This product is a Bi-stable Reeled Composite (BRC) tape—a material that can be either rolled into a tight spiral or extended into a rigid linear split-tube.  This product grants breachers better capabilities in comparison to traditional explosive support materials due to its lightweight, compact, rigid, and extendable nature. Used as a prop stick, the Instant Stick can be stored and carried in a pocket or pouch and then instantly extended into a rigid split-tube that can support over 50 lbs: this is a significant improvement when compared to carrying a wooden 2×4 from your armored vehicle, out of an aircraft/helicopter, or from the last covered and concealed to the target. As an explosive backing, the Instant Stick’s rigid linear shape makes charge deployment quicker and more efficient than traditional explosive backings due to its bi-stable design.  According to research conducted at military training facilities, the Instant Stick reduces explosive charge deployment time by more than 50% and creates no harmful shrapnel or fragmentation. Instant Stick increases mobility and decreases time spent on target, both significant safety improvements for users.

The Instant Stick’s bi-stable nature allows the charge to be folded or rolled for easy transport. Once at the target, the Instant Stick’s design allows for rapid deployment. It’s self-supporting structure makes charge placement to varying surfaces easier; the Instant Stick increases reliability in adverse mission environments such as sand, dust, and rain.  As a proven supporting structure and/or a pushing medium, the use of BRC’s with explosive entry charges is a significant improvement in explosive support materials.

Explosive entry is a vitally important tool for today’s users.  However, the materials and technology currently used are not optimal for a modern operational landscape. The development of BRC’s as explosive support materials gives operators a lightweight, flexible-yet-rigid, and dynamic material that can be used as either an explosive backing or prop stick.  This new development gives operators improved mobility, decreased deployment time, and reliable target placement.
